Sagwa
Created by Amy Tan
Sagwa was one of the three pearl white kittens
born to Mama Miao and Baba Miao, two fine cats
who lived in a place everyone called the House
of the Foolish Magistrate.
Sagwa is a middle child. She is adventurous,
curious, independent, tolerant, and she learns
from her mistakes. She is trying hard to find her
place in the world. Her best friend is a bat named Fu-Fu, a helpful
and funny companion.Fu-Fu means "lucky bat. Sagwa has a little sister
named Sheegwa, adorable and a little shy. Her older brother,
Dongwha, is proud and adventurous, and Sagwa's parents
are loving yet they put their paw down when the children
are misbehaving. Sagwa and her siblings love to visit the
cook and get shrimp and Tufo. They also write on scrolls for the
magistrate with their tails.Grandfather Yeh-Yeh is always telling
them stories of the past and traditions
The Foolish Magistrate, his wife Tai-Tai
and their three daughters, Ba-Do, Luk-Do
and Huang-Do are the humans with whom Sagwa's
family lives. The Magistrate is a comic character
who passes very foolish laws, rules and proclamations
for the people of his province
Sagwa's adventures and the beautiful setting of China
long ago provide children opportunities for exploring
questions about growing up and discovering the richness
of different cultures around the world. The stories are set in
China in the late 19th century.
