The other day I spotted a mouse
Running up my basement steps
I quickly called my big orange tom out
To do what Cats do best

But lo and behold to my surprise
Instead of chasing  it back out the door
He just looked at me and laid  flat out on the floor!

He just laid there and waited while
And that mouse ran around him in a whirl
It ran up his tail all the way to his head
and nestled in that big toms  fur

My Cat  had a smile from ear to ear
I sighed and told him
“Now  you just listen  here”

“You can have all the friends you want.
I 've never been one to split hairs
But if he has a wife and kids too
He just cannot stay here!”

From then on for years to come the  unlikely pair
could be seen from time to time
cuddling around in my house  somewhere

I never saw a wife
I never saw a tiny one either
But I could swear that tom eats much more food
Day by day and year after year!
